PROcycle: Turning Waste into Resources

By choosing Protan, you choose a solution built to last – while also reducing your environmental footprint.

The construction industry is one of the largest contributors to waste globally, but Protan is taking bold steps to change that. With the launch of PROcycle, Protan is revolutionizing how roofing materials are managed, ensuring waste is recycled and reused instead of ending up in landfills or incinerators.

A Sustainable Vision: Futureproofing Waterproofing

From August 2024, Protan is offering all Scandinavian customers a groundbreaking service: free collection of SE cut-offs and surplus materials from construction sites. Furthermore, Protan guarantees to reclaim all roofing membranes produced after August 2024 at the end of their lifecycle.

With PROcycle, we collect cut-offs and surplus materials from construction sites or customer locations at no cost. These materials are transported to our factory in Lier, where they are shredded, cleaned, and reintroduced into the production of new roofing membranes. This solution has already been successfully tested with key partners, and now we’re rolling it out to all our customers. It’s an important step towards delivering on our vision of ‘Futureproofing Waterproofing’.

Making a Measurable Impact

Protan produces 18–20 million square meters of roofing membranes annually. Through PROcycle, the company expects to collect 15,000 square meters of cut-offs and surplus materials in Scandinavia every year.

This initiative will significantly reduce Protan’s carbon footprint, promote circularity in the construction industry, and contribute to the global effort to combat climate change.

Circular Economy in Action

  • By reclaiming and recycling materials, Protan ensures its products are part of a circular lifecycle. Recycled roofing materials are processed at Protan’s factory in Lier, where they are cleaned and repurposed.

  • The recycling process currently reintegrates 5–8% of materials into new roofing membranes, but Protan aims to increase this. It is possible to use up to 50% recycled material.

This recycling solution applies to all roofing membranes sold in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark from August 2024 onwards.

Collaboration for a Greener Future

The Norwegian construction industry alone generates 3.2 million tons of construction waste annually—equivalent to 582 kilograms per person. With PROcycle, Protan is tackling this challenge head-on, setting a new standard for sustainable practices in the industry.

– Collaboration is key to creating meaningful change, says Line Brødremoen Brevig, Sustainability Manager at Protan.

– PROcycle is a clear example of how businesses can work together with customers to create lasting environmental impact.

Leading the Industry in Sustainability

PROcycle is a cornerstone of Protan’s sustainability strategy, aligning with the company’s commitment to reducing waste, lowering carbon emissions, and conserving natural resources. By giving waste a second life, Protan is proving that the future of construction can be both sustainable and innovative.
