Ann-Helen and Annika Breaking Barriers in the Construction Industry

In an industry where hard hats are most often worn by men, two tough women stand out – literally, on the roof. Working as a roofer requires strength, precision, and endurance, but also a keen eye for detail and problem-solving.

The average representation of women in the construction workforce globally is 8.69 %, which indicates significant underrepresentation (read more). Additionally, research from Sintef (2018) shows that a more gender-balanced work environment can contribute to lower conflict levels and a better overall workplace.

Ann-Helen: From Helper to Project Manager

For Ann-Helen, it was a friend who introduced her to the industry. She started as a helper in 2019 and quickly thrived in her role. In 2023, she earned her trade certificate and has since climbed the career ladder to service leader and recently to project manager, responsible for several major projects.

"I grew up on a farm and have always liked physical work and being outdoors. As a roofer, I love seeing the results of what I've done each day. There’s always something new and a sense of change." says Ann-Helen.

«Every day gives me a sense of accomplishment, especially when I’ve braved bad weather!»

Annika: Roofing Across Northern Norway

Annika already had a foot in the construction industry when she was introduced to Protan and the roofing trade through her husband. She has now been working as a roofer for nearly three years.

"I like that each project is different. I get to travel around Northern Norway and experience many fantastic places. Each place is unique, and I love getting stronger every day," says Annika.

Tough Challenges, Strong Women

The construction site environment can be tough for many. However, both Annika and Ann-Helen feel included and well taken care of, both at Protan Entreprenør and at the job sites they’ve worked on.

«I often see men surprised to see a woman on a construction site, but they quickly get used to it, and it doesn’t feel strange»

Annika

Ann-Helen enjoys working with men and has never had any problems with it. She feels like part of the team and believes that everyone is easy to get along with.

One common stereotype is that roofing is too physically demanding for women, but both Annika and Ann-Helen are solution-oriented.

"Yes, it’s tough work, especially when you’re small like me, which can be frustrating at times. I ask for help when I need it, and there are many ways you can contribute to the team. You can insulate, weld, or clean, and let others handle the heavier lifting. There’s always something to do, and no reason to feel excluded." says Annika.

But not everyone wants help from the guys. Ann-Helen prefers to be independent and treated the same way as her male colleagues. "Sometimes they give extra help, like lifting things or opening doors. It can be a bit annoying because I’d rather be treated the same as the others. At the same time, I’ve learned that teamwork is important, and asking for help is not a weakness – quite the opposite!"

Ann-Helen and Annika have a clear message for other women considering a career in the construction industry:
"You just have to try! Dare to take up space and show initiative!"
